If you are American or Canadian, I recommend trying to find copies of “Leave It to Chance” and possibly “American Splendor.” If you live near a comics store, you might try to find issues of ‘The Adventures of Uncle Scrooge’ and ‘Little Archie’ from the sixties (which could be pricey).. If your are European, try find copies of “Lucky Luke” albums.
If you’re a fan of the clean, simplified and cartoony look of Asterix and Tintin, I second the “Leave it to Chance” recommendation. You might also want to check out Jeff Smith’s “Bone,” Frank Cho’s “Liberty Meadows,” Will Eisner’s “The Spirit,” Walt Kelly’s “Pogo,” The later issues of “Sam & Max: Freelance Police,” and, “The Tick.”
