Batman's first appearance was in a six page story, "The Case of the Chemical Synicate," in Detective Comics #27. By today's standards the story was primative. Commisioner Gordon was the only supporting character and the last page of the story revealed that Batman was Bruce Wayne, without revealing anything else about Bruce Wayne, except that he lived in an upstairs apartment in an apartment building and that Gordon considered Wayne lazy and unfocused but otherwise a pleasant fellow. Batman was wanted by the police "for questioning," and drove a red convertible; he didn't wind killing in self-defense (he killed one crimal for certain, and either killed another or crippled him for life). No one knew why Batman was doing what he was doing, and the reader wasn't given any clues either. Detective Comics #27 is cover dated April, and was probably on sale in February of 1939.

The first comic completely devoted to Batman was called, naturally, "Batman," was published four times a year, and had a cover date of "Spring !940." Chances are it was on sale in March of that year. By the time the first issue of Batman was published, Batman had gained an origin, a boy partner (Robin was the first costumed boy partner and set the standard for many more such characters who followed), a fiance, a bat-cave, a mansion on the outskirts of town, a batgyro (forerunner of the batplane), and a few reoccuring foes (Batman #1 introduced two such foes who are still well known, the Joker and the Cat (who soon became known as Catwoman).
